open-ended straight draw

Definition

Plain language

In poker, having four cards in a row that need just one more card on either end to complete a straight.

As stated in the literature

A drawing hand with four to a straight open at both ends, giving eight outs to complete; in the PokerSkill hand trace it is the basis for a cheap turn semi-bluff.

Why it matters: It is a strong drawing hand that gives a player twice the chances to improve, making it a good candidate for a cheap, aggressive semi-bluff.

For example, holding 6-7-8-9 means either a 5 or a 10 on the next card completes your straight, giving you two ways to hit it.

Heard on the show
