Plain language
A pretend computer running inside a real one, so programs can run in a controlled space.
As stated in the literature
Software-emulated execution environment; here a bytecode interpreter with bounded memory and step budget in which every instruction string is executable.
Also called: virtual machines, VM
Why it matters: It lets researchers run arbitrary, possibly broken code safely and with hard limits on time and memory, so nothing hangs or escapes into the real system.
For example, a risky program can be run inside this pretend computer so that if it crashes or loops forever, only the pretend computer is affected.

“The server compiles it, deploys it onto a Windows VM running under QEMU, executes it against the live service, and any crash is captured by an attached debugger — WinDbg.”Episode 024 — An AI Agent That Found 28 Zero-Days in Windows — And What Made It Work
