Plain language
Faking a photo by cutting a piece out of one image and pasting it into another.
As stated in the literature
Compositing regions from different source images; detectable via mismatched noise, lighting, and compression statistics at region boundaries, unlike whole-region diffusion re-rendering.
Also called: spliced, splice
Why it matters: It is the fakery pattern most detectors are tuned for, so its telltale seams are the traces investigators look for — and their absence is what makes newer edits hard to catch.
For example, someone drops a person cut from one photograph into a group picture they were never actually in.
