Definition

Plain language

The text window where you type commands directly to a computer.

As stated in the literature

Command interpreter process (e.g. bash) exposed to an agent as a tool; child processes launched from it inherit its lifetime unless explicitly detached.

Also called: shells

Why it matters: Shell access is the difference between an AI that talks about changes and one that makes them, including changes to files the user never mentioned.

For example, an assistant given shell access can type the same install or delete commands a person would type into a terminal window.

Heard on the show

“The model is given tools — the ability to read files, run shell commands, SSH into servers, modify configs.”
