preamble

Definition

Plain language

The setup section at the top of a file, before the main content.

As stated in the literature

The header region of a source file containing imports, definitions and notation declarations; in this setup it was editable while the theorem statement below it was byte-protected.

Also called: preambles

Why it matters: Because the preamble sets up what everything below it means, leaving it editable while locking the main text can protect the wrong half of the file.

For example, the top of a document might list which tools and shorthands are in use before a single word of the actual argument appears.

Heard on the show
