Definition

Plain language

The invisible character that ends a line of text.

As stated in the literature

The line-break character (\n); when a transcript format uses newlines as its only record separator, agent-authored text containing a newline can forge additional transcript entries.

Also called: newlines, new line

Why it matters: This unremarkable character becomes a weapon whenever a system uses it as the only boundary between records, because any text that can contain a newline can fake new records.

For example, if an assistant writes a commit message containing a line break, a log that treats each line as one entry will suddenly appear to contain two entries instead of one.

Heard on the show

“At one point it's counting individual characters, including invisible newlines, to predict that a byte-count command returns exactly fifty-three bytes.”
