Definition

Plain language

One giant code repository holding all of a company's projects together.

As stated in the literature

A single version-controlled repository containing many projects or services; convenient for shared tooling, but it also means a read-capable agent sees the entire private codebase at once.

Also called: mono-repo, monorepos

Why it matters: It makes shared tooling and sweeping refactors easy, but it also means any agent with read access is standing in front of the whole company's code rather than one project.

For example, a company might keep its mobile app, billing service, and internal admin tools all in one repository, so checking it out puts every team's source code in a single folder.

Heard on the show

“It copies three hundred and seventy files, from the private monorepo into the public fork's checkout.”
