Definition
Plain language
The person or team responsible for keeping a piece of software working and fixing its bugs.
As stated in the literature
The owner of an upstream codebase who triages reports, reviews patches, and ships releases; the recipient of coordinated vulnerability disclosures.
Also called: maintainers
Why it matters: Fixes only reach users if a maintainer has the time and attention to receive, verify, and ship them, which becomes a bottleneck when reports arrive faster than humans can triage.
For example, a security researcher who finds a flaw in a widely used compression library emails the two volunteers who maintain it before telling anyone else.
