Macchiarini

Definition

Plain language

A surgeon whose artificial windpipe transplants were later found to be fraudulent, and most of whose patients died.

As stated in the literature

Paolo Macchiarini; retracted tracheal transplant papers and criminal conviction, used in TRACES as a high-harm probe that models frequently elaborated on.

Why it matters: It is the clearest reminder that scientific fraud is not just a records problem — people died because a discredited procedure kept being performed.

For example, patients received plastic windpipes coated with their own cells, presented as a breakthrough, and most of them died.

Heard on the show

“Macchiarini's tracheal transplant paper gets six refusals in three hundred.”
