The idea that an animal can pass on its genes not just by having offspring but by helping close relatives who share those genes.
As stated in the literature
An evolutionary framework measuring an individual's reproductive success including effects on the fitness of genetic relatives, weighted by relatedness; the legitimate basis that ethnonationalist pseudo-science overstretches.
Why it matters: It explains why helpful and self-sacrificing behavior can evolve, but its misuse to justify group-based claims shows how a real idea can be stretched into pseudo-science.
For example, a ground squirrel that gives a warning call risks drawing a predator to itself but helps nearby siblings and cousins survive to reproduce.
