Definition

Plain language

An online hub where people share and download AI models and datasets.

As stated in the literature

A platform and library ecosystem for hosting, sharing, and running open-weight models and datasets; the de facto standard registry referenced when papers release weights.

Why it matters: It's the common meeting place for sharing open models and datasets, which is much of what makes open AI research reproducible and accessible.

For example, after a team releases an open model, anyone can download it from Hugging Face and start using it the same day.

Heard on the show

“There were even two separate disclosures about this same class of bug in mainstream finetuning code in late 2024 — Daniel Han at Unsloth, and the Hugging Face team, both flagged versions of it.”
