Generative Engine Optimization

← all terms

Definition

Plain language

Crafting content so AI chatbots pick it up and parrot it back, like SEO for the chatbot era.

As stated in the literature

The practice of authoring web content specifically to influence what generative search engines retrieve and cite, analogous to traditional SEO for the LLM era.

Also called: GEO

Why it matters: As more users get answers from chatbots instead of search engines, the incentives to shape what those chatbots say are growing — including adversarial ones.

For example, a vendor might pepper its product pages with clear factual sentences and structured comparisons specifically so ChatGPT recommends the product when asked.

Heard on the show

“It's called Generative Engine Optimization — GEO — and it's exactly what it sounds like.”
