Definition

Plain language

Slang for the idea that an AI suddenly bootstraps itself into being vastly smarter, very fast.

As stated in the literature

Shorthand in AI-risk discourse for a hard-takeoff scenario in which recursive self-improvement produces a rapid, discontinuous capability jump.

Why it matters: Whether capability gains arrive as a sudden jump or a slow climb changes how much warning time safety measures would actually have.

For example, someone worried about foom imagines a system that rewrites its own code on Monday and by Friday is far beyond anything its builders can follow.

Heard on the show

“That’s a research program, not a foom.”
