Definition
Plain language
A miss — something dangerous that the checker waved through.
As stated in the literature
A positive instance classified as negative; in monitoring, an unsafe action that is allowed. Recall is the complement of the false-negative rate.
Also called: false negatives, false-negative
Why it matters: In safety monitoring a false negative is the expensive kind of mistake — a false alarm merely annoys someone, while a miss lets the harmful action actually happen.
For example, a spam filter that lets an obvious phishing email land in your inbox has produced a false negative.
