episodic memory

Definition

Plain language

A running diary of specific things that happened.

As stated in the literature

A persisted record of concrete events and episodes, as opposed to generalized knowledge; here a workspace file the agent writes between sessions that survives context resets.

Also called: episodic memories

Why it matters: Specific remembered events give an agent the raw material to spot patterns later, which generic advice alone cannot provide.

For example, a note reading "tried throwing the block from the beach at 3:12, it fell short of the ledge" is episodic memory, while "throws fall short from low ground" is not.
