Definition
Plain language
A shared resource that many people draw on and nobody individually owns.
As stated in the literature
A common-pool resource governed by collective rules; knowledge commons are non-rival, so the failure mode is pollution of trust rather than depletion.
Also called: knowledge commons
Why it matters: Shared resources collapse without agreed rules about who takes what — and for shared pools of knowledge the danger is not running out but filling up with things nobody can trust.
For example, a village grazing meadow that every farmer's herd feeds on, and that nobody holds the deed to, is a classic commons.
