A tank that keeps living cells alive and growing under controlled conditions.

Vessel providing controlled temperature, gas exchange, perfusion and mechanical cues for cell culture; used in tissue engineering to mature seeded scaffolds before implantation.
Also called: bioreactor maturation
Why it matters: Without controlled conditions to keep cells alive and maturing, an engineered tissue is just an inert object when it reaches the patient.
For example, a scaffold seeded with cells might sit for weeks in a warm, nutrient-fed chamber that gently pumps fluid through it before anyone considers implanting it.
