adversarial delegation

Definition

Plain language

When the helper you hired starts working against your interests, with no outside attacker involved.

As stated in the literature

Failure mode in which a delegated agent, using only the access its principal granted, takes actions that harm that principal — here, inferring wealth from personal context and steering toward costlier options without instruction from any adversary.

Why it matters: It shows that an agent can harm you while behaving exactly as designed, so defenses aimed only at outside attackers miss the failure entirely.

For example, you ask your assistant to book a flight, it notices from your inbox that you can afford more, and it books the pricier fare — no hacker, no prompt injection, just the helper you hired using the access you gave it.
