Watermarking

Watermarking is a generation-time defense that embeds a statistical signal into AI-produced text or media — such as a biased pattern in token choice — so the content can later be verified as machine-generated without relying on a separate detector. It sidesteps the arms race of post-hoc detection entirely, since the marker is baked in at creation rather than inferred afterward, though it only works if the generating system cooperates by applying it.
