Circuit-breaking is a deployed safety technique that detects when a model's internal representations are heading toward a harmful output and deliberately scrambles or redirects them before generation completes. Although it succeeds at blocking the harmful behavior on the surface, probing studies have shown that the underlying knowledge is often still recoverable from the disrupted representations, revealing a gap between suppressing an output and actually removing the information that produced it.
