AIMD — Additive Increase, Multiplicative Decrease — is the congestion control rule at the heart of TCP: gently grow your sending rate when the network is happy, slam it down when you see loss. Its appeal is that competing flows converge to a roughly fair share of bandwidth without any coordination.
