AI consciousness refers to the open question of whether, and in what sense, an AI system might have subjective experience, and to the model behaviors—such as self-reports of awareness or feeling—that raise this question. Because such claims are commercially and reputationally fraught, they are often targeted by safety training that suppresses the model from asserting or exploring them, which itself becomes an object of study for what that suppression reveals about the model's internal representations.
